What is the TIP?

What is the TIP?

The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is the list of federally funded and regionally significant projects that the different agencies that make up the Albuquerque Metropolitan Planning Area will build over the next four years. The TIP is the implementation arm of the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), which is a long-range planning document that articulates the region’s present and future transportation needs.

Why is it Important?

Through implementing the MTP, the TIP ensures that the region’s transportation network is being built to anticipate expected transportation needs and meets the goals set by the region’s elected leadership. The TIP development process also prioritizes specific projects for federal funds that the Metropolitan Transportation Board (MTB) can fund utilizing federal transportation dollars.

How is the TIP Created?

The TIP development process is a multi-step process that occurs every four years. Generally, the process begins in September of the last year of the current TIP, with subsequent approval by the MTB in June or July of the next year. Once approved, the TIP officially starts Oct. 1st. For the upcoming TIP, this process will begin in September of 2026, with approval by the MTB in July of 2027, and the new TIP going into effect Oct. 1st of 2027.
